As a DevOps Engineer with 3Squared you’ll take an active role in technical innovation, maintaining the position of the RailSmart suite of products in the rail industry.

 

What 3Squared Do

3Squared build innovative and technically imaginative software solutions for the rail and construction sectors and has grown from 3 people and an idea in 2002 to a 50 strong team of talented people delivering award winning software for an ever-growing list of customers on the UK and abroad.

 

What you tell your friends you do

I use my knowledge and expertise solve problems with technology. It’s a varied role, one day I’m helping developers define a new infrastructure and the next I’m automating server configuration.  My main goal is to ensure smooth operations of all our systems and ensure customers continue to have a great experience using our software.

 

What you’ll really be doing

  • Working as part of a team to design and implement hosting solutions using cloud components, and then monitoring, maintaining and improving them
  • Providing expertise on technical matters to clients and colleagues
  • Taking responsibility for infrastructure security
  • Taking a lead on technical resolution during incident scenarios
  • Keeping your eyes and ears open for ways we can further streamline our processes

 

How you’ll be doing this

  • You’ll be part of an agile, multidisciplinary team, bringing your own unique skill set to the table to collaborate with others
  • You’ll join an on-call rota for 24/7 response to P1 client issues
  • You’ll collaborate with
    • the Service Design team to understand client requirements, paying particular attention to the interactions with and implications on hosting infrastructure
    • the Development team to collaborate on the selection and design of technical architectures used to provide solutions to the needs of our customers
    • the Project Management team to inform estimates and ensure timely delivery
    • the Quality Assurance team to facilitate performance, load and security testing of infrastructure on an ongoing basis
  • You’ll work within the IT & Support team to monitor and report upon live environments, taking action to maintain excellent levels of service. You will assist with the investigation of live issues reported by customers, and will provide training and documentation on new infrastructure to the department to ensure they are able to react quickly to client raised issues

 

What we’ve worked on recently

  • Improving performance and reliability of APIs integrating with mainframe systems
  • Developed synthetic transaction monitoring of APIs using Postman, and integrated this into our alerting system
  • Systems streaming live data from hardware telemetry systems and displaying this in a modern web-based interface
  • Analysing performance of a complex application across multiple service and identifying areas to target to improve customer experience
  • Consulted on technical solutions to business problems within the rail industry
  • A bit of good old-fashioned system administration

 

Skills & Requirements

  • You’re a technical and analytical person, with a confident technical knowledge of web hosting concepts, but you’re also able to convey technical information to a non-technical audience
  • You understand the importance of cloud, and the differences between cloud hosting and traditional co-located hosting
  • You have used componentised cloud hosting, for example Azure App Service, SQL Database, CosmosDB, Storage, Service Bus, Virtual Machines and Azure Networking
  • You are keen to work closely with developers
  • You understand DevOps as an approach rather than just a buzzword – and can talk about the problems it set out to address
  • You can describe why we monitor systems, and what the goal of this monitoring is
  • You have experience in web hosting within IaaS and PaaS models, and an in depth understanding of the protocols and technologies involved
  • You have a proven track record of maintaining system availability for complex systems with many concurrent users
  • You also have previous involvement in solution design based on customer requirements, and involvement in infrastructure security
  • You’ll really impress us if you have experience
    • working with Microsoft EA Azure accounts, departments and subscriptions
    • with RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, and/or other message queueing systems
    • of SQL Database Administration and Optimisation
    • using Terraform to manage Azure Resources
    • of container technologies, such as Docker
    • with Debian/Ubuntu
    • within the Rail Sector
